‘Ho-Ho-Ho’, ‘Ho Hum’ or ‘Bah Humbug’. Which best describes how you feel about this holiday season? You may be looking forward to all the festivities, family gatherings and exchange of gifts, looking to avoid the hubbub, or simply do not care one way or the other.

Whatever the case, this season is loaded with ‘shoulds’.  You may be faced with making decisions about how and with whom you will spend your time.  Possibly some of the choices you make will be based less on what you really want than ‘obligations’ and ‘traditions’.

I suggest that, before you commit to plans, you get in touch with how you really feel ‘inside’. Allow yourself to notice those feelings:  what makes you feel good, neutral or not so good?  ‘Weigh-in’ with yourself; let your bodily reactions help you decide what truly feels like your best course of action. Notice how certain beliefs may be challenged and questioned by this process. That’s good! In my opinion, ‘tis always the season to check in and remember the one thing you always have control over is what you think.

For example, if your heart starts to beat outside of your chest at the thought of flying to California to be with family – maybe the belief that you have to go because it is ‘expected’ can be modified. You can change your mindset and choose to act according to your true desire to stay put in New England this year.

It is in your best interest to remember that your body has its proverbial ‘thumb on the pulse’ at all times and is always communicating your underlying truth.  If you ignore that truth, be careful… your body may take action. You may get sick, your back may ‘go out’ or you may erupt in hives.

Here is a simple way to gauge your body’s response to what you think you should do, are considering taking on or entertaining the thought of doing.

Sit quietly and tune into your breath.  When you feel settled in, place a hand lightly upon your sternum (upper chest area), and call to mind the thought of one plan or task you are considering or have already consented to do.  Monitor your emotional and body responses. Has your breathing pattern changed, do you feel any aches, flutters or tension? Then imagine yourself not taking on this activity and notice if you feel a shift.

You are now informed. Is it a ‘Ho-Ho-Ho’, ‘Ho Hum’ or ‘Bah Humbug’? With this insight you can make changes, settle into and play out your true desires.
